Growing up

We were already the darlings of the small standing restaurant in the Baumarkt, which is the German version of Home Depot. I had ordered a half chicken with fries, a soft pretzel and a sparkling apple juice to be shared by the entire family and we all huddled over the plate fighting over choice bits of chicken and getting ketchup everywhere while the kids reminded us loudly that they wanted ice cream for dessert.
Suddenly K went ridged and hollered: 'MOMMY! MY TOOTH CAME OUT!!!'
And sure enough, there was my baby's tooth in her hand.
Side comment: In winter this outburst would have attracted many disapproving, constipated looks but as it happens, the Germans lighten up a LOT in spring and a few stern faces looked like they were trying hard not to smile as K ran around showing her beautiful bloody tooth stump to the other diners.
L, only 3 years old with a full head of teeth, was not to be outdone: 'MOMMY! I HAVE TO GO TO THE TOIIIIIIIIIILETTTTTTTTTTTT!!!'
K was congratulated, L was whisked off to the little girls' room with a swish of displaced air, the chicken was picked clean and we returned trimphantly home with dry britches, new shelving, the entire family fed for 10 euros and my baby girl growing up way to fast.

  1. Congrats to K! I hope that the tooth fairy comes and gives her a quarter. Or an iPod.

  5. Does the Tooth Fairy go to Germany? If so, I'd vote for the iPod--good call Kristina P!

  9. I'm afraid we had to get rid of the sandbox because it was rotten, the sides had fallen off and there were nails everywhere. On the other hand, there is a communal sand box about 40 seconds away from the house and we are filling up the sandbox at the country cottage... Believe me - there is enough sand for that six-year-old and his 7-yr-old sister too!

  10. So, do the German kids ever get excited, or are they just like their parents?

  11. R - yes, German kids are very normal and not especially better behaved than our kids. Our kids (or at least K) are maybe just a little more outgoing in situations like these with strangers.
